When I read Daniel 1:1–2, I see Nebuchadnezzar defeating King Jehoiakim and conquering Jerusalem. At first, it looks as if God’s people were simply overpowered by a heathen king. But then verse 2 caught my attention: “The Lord gave him victory over King Jehoiakim of Judah and permitted him to take some of the sacred objects from the Temple of God” (NLT).

That word “permitted” really spoke to me. It reminded me that Nebuchadnezzar didn’t win because of his own strength alone—it was allowed by God. I find so much assurance in this thought. Even in today’s world, with all its chaos and uncertainty, I can hold on to the truth that my Heavenly Father is still in control of everything.

As I kept reading, I noticed the same theme again in Daniel 2:37–38, where the words “has given you” and “made you” are used. To me, this shows God’s overarching control, not only over powerful kingdoms like Babylon but also over the details of personal lives. I admit, there are times when I question God’s leading in my own life. But when I remember His goodness, I find hope—even in moments of difficulty and uncertainty.

This short reflection is really just my way of reminding myself, and hopefully you too, that God’s hand is never absent. As I wait for His Second Coming, I want to keep trusting that no matter how things look on the surface, the Lord still rules over all.
